A PRACTICE OF REPATTERNING

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Why Your Body Loves It

When was the last time you thought about your lymphatic system? If you're like most people, probably never. But this quiet, behind-the-scenes system is essential to your overall health - and when it's not flowing well, you feel it. That’s where Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) comes in.

MLD is a gentle, rhythmic style of bodywork designed to support your lymphatic system, help move stagnant lymph, and encourage your body’s natural detox process. Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses light, purposeful strokes to stimulate lymph flow just beneath the surface of your skin. The rhythmic action not only assists lymphatic circulation but also helps regulate and calm the nervous system, making it especially beneficial for those dealing with stress, anxiety, or fatigue.

So What Is the Lymphatic System, Anyway?

Your lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes, and organs that helps your body:

  • Filter out waste, toxins, and excess fluids
  • Transport immune cells
  • Support digestion and tissue health
  • Calm your nervous system

Think of it as your body’s internal cleaning crew - working 24/7 to keep things flowing and balanced.

But here’s the catch: the lymphatic system doesn’t have its own pump. It relies on movement, breath, hydration, and sometimes a little outside help to keep things circulating. When things get sluggish due to stress, illness, surgery, injury, or a sedentary lifestyle you might notice puffiness, fatigue, brain fog, and even lowered immunity.

The Benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage

MLD is a powerful but gentle way to reset and support your body. Clients often come in feeling heavy, tense, or bloated and leave feeling lighter, clearer, and deeply relaxed.

Here are some of the top benefits:
  • Boosts immune function by supporting lymph circulation
  • Reduces swelling and water retention (especially after travel, injury, or surgery)
  • Calms the nervous system, promoting deeper rest and better sleep
  • Supports digestive health and gentle detoxification
  • Improves tissue healing and recovery from injury or surgery
  • Eases headaches, sinus pressure, and tension
  • Enhances skin health and may support clearer, more vibrant skin

What to Expect in a Session

During a session, you’ll lie on the table, fully draped, while I use slow, rhythmic strokes designed to work with the traction of the skin and encourage lymph flow. The pressure is light - but don’t let that fool you. MLD is doing deep work on a subtle level. Many clients describe it as feeling meditative, grounding and deeply restorative.

Who Is It For?

MLD is for anyone wanting to feel more clear, grounded, and supported in their body. Whether you're recovering from surgery, managing a chronic condition, or just feeling a little "off," this work helps reset your system gently and effectively.

I’ve been trained in MLD by Klose Training, and I’m always happy to chat if you’re wondering whether it’s right for you.
